Four D.C. officers on leave after deadly Friday incident

Four D.C. police officers are on leave after a Friday afternoon incident in which a man died after police went to Southwest D.C. to assist Department of Mental Health personnel, police said.

When officers arrived in the unit block of P St., Anthony Chambers, 38, assaulted the officers, police said Friday. The officers subdued Chambers and placed him in handcuffs, according to police, then Chambers became unconscious.

Emergency personnel took Chambers to a hospital, where he died, according to police.

An autopsy is pending. The four officers have been placed on administrative leave with pay, police said, and the department’s internal affairs division is investigating the incident.
