Germantown crash kills 1, injures 2

A teenaged driver was killed and his two passengers were injured overnight when their car collided with a fully-loaded dump truck at a major intersection in Germantown, Montgomery County police said Friday.

The accident investigation is slowing the morning commute, and the intersection of Germantown and Middlebrook roads will likely remain closed for several more hours, according to police.

The driver of the car, Ivar Candia, 18, of Germantown, was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries and later died, police said. The passengers, ages 17 and 33, are in stable condition. The driver of the dump truck was not injured.

An officer came upon the scene of the crash shortly after 1 a.m., police said. The car, an Audi, was headed westbound on Middlebrook Road when it hit the dump truck, which was going northbound on Germantown Road.

At the time, the signal at the intersection was in late-night mode. The Audi had a flashing red and the dump truck had a flashing yellow, police said. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
