Guilty plea for former Va. woman in daughter’s shaking death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A former Virginia resident has pleaded guilty in the shaking death of her 11-month-old daughter.

Julie M. Calahan pleaded guilty Tuesday in Virginia Beach Circuit Court to felony child abuse and voluntary manslaughter.

Virginia Beach police had thought the case was over after Calahan’s brother-in-law was sentenced to a year for child neglect. The Virginian-Pilot reports the investigation was reopened last year after comments about Calahan’s involvement in the May 2009 death of Lakeira Calahan were posted on a social networking website.

Detective Janine Hall testified that Julie Calahan, who had moved to Brinkley, Ark., was interviewed about the comments and she eventually confessed.

Calahan faces up to 20 years in prison. Sentencing is set for Nov. 14.
