Gunman robs victim in D.C. church

A man with a gun robbed a person of money and an iPhone inside an Episcopal church in Northwest Washington on Saturday, then pointed his gun at a second victim before running away, according to D.C. police.

Authorities did not identify either victim or say whether they were affiliated with the St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church in the 1500 block of Newton St. in Columbia Heights.

Police said the gunman walked into the church shortly before 12:30 p.m., ordered the first victim to the ground and demanded money.

Police said the man went through the victim’s pockets and took money, a wallet and phone.

He then pointed his gun at a woman who entered the room during the robbery, police said, and then fled.

Authorities, who released surveillance images of the gunman, described him as a black male with a medium complexion and brown eyes, 18 to 20 years old and standing between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall. He was wearing a black mask, a striped polo-style short-sleeve shirt and blue jeans and had a black handgun.

Anyone with information is asked to call D.C. police at 202-727-9029 or text the department’s tip line at 50411.
