Lanham man shot dead after party, police say attack was gang-related

Prince George’s County police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old Lanham man who officers say was shot in a gang-related incident following a hotel party Sunday morning.

At around 4 a.m. police were called to the 9100 block of Baltimore Avenue in College Park for the report of a shooting. There they found David Esequel Avelar, of the 6600 block of 94th Ave., suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Avelar was transported to a nearby hospital and was later pronounced dead.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that Avelar’s death was gang related. Avelar had attended a party at a hotel on Baltimore Avenue and a fight had broken out in the parking lot between the group Avelar was with and another group of individuals who were attending a different party at the same hotel. Avelar was shot during the fight, police said.

Individuals with information regarding the shooting are asked to contact Prince George’s homicide unit at 301-772-4925 or Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
