Homeless man dies of burns after shelter fire

A homeless man has died following a fire in an abandoned building he was using for shelter, authorities said.

Police and fire and rescue units responded to the fire on Thursday evening in the 13400 block of Jefferson Davis Highway in Woodbridge and discovered several homeless individuals using the building as a temporary residence.

William John Maybin was burned severely and was flown to a local burn trauma hospital; the 75-year-old died from his burns the same evening, police said.

The Prince William County Police and Fire Marshal’s Office said the fire seems accidental but are investigating to determine its cause.
