Homicide investigated in Clinton

Update, 5:30 p.m.:

Terry Sutherland, a Pentagon Force Protection Agency spokesman, said the officer, who will have served eight years in September, was released back to his own agency. He said he might be given a few days leave, but that leave was not punitive and instead meant to give the officer time to collect his own thoughts.

Sutherland declined to discuss the specifics of the investigation, saying he would defer to Prince George’s County police, who were handling the case. He did say that the gun used was the officer’s personally owned weapon. Sparkman said the officer was off duty and in plain clothes.

Update, 4:20 p.m.:

An off-duty federal police officer shot and killed an armed male who he saw beating another male outside a Clinton gas station Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident occurred at about 1:30 pm outside the Mobil gas station and Market Place convenience store in the 9800 block of Piscataway Road. Lt. Tammy Sparkman, a Prince George’s County police spokeswoman, said the off-duty federal officer pulled into the station and saw one male beating another male, who was lying on the ground. As the officer went to intervene, Sparkman said, he saw the assailant pull out a handgun.

Sparkman said when the officer identified himself, the armed male “turned toward” him with the gun. The officer then fired his weapon, Sparkman said, shooting and killing the male.

Sparkman said police are still probing the precise details of the encounter, and it was “too early to say” whether charges would be filed. She declined to say what agency the officer was with.

The male who was beaten was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, Sparkman said.

Federal officers on the scene, who appeared to be with the Pentagon police, declined to comment.
