Judge: Accused Va. triple murderer incompetent to stand trial

MADISON, Va. — A judge says a Newport News man accused of killing three relatives isn’t mentally competent to stand trial.

Twenty-five-year-old Rashad Riddick is charged with three counts of capital murder in the fatal shootings of his uncle, his aunt and his cousin in February 2011.

Media outlets say Riddick will be returned to Central State Hospital for treatment following Madison County Circuit Court Judge Daniel Bouton’s ruling on Wednesday.

Defense experts testified that Riddick isn’t able to understand the court proceedings or to help with his defense because he suffers from a rare delusional disorder.

During an Aug. 1 hearing, Riddick attacked his attorney in court. He was heavily restrained and surrounded by five law enforcement officers during Wednesday’s hearing.
