A federal judge will decide whether to release a presidential historian charged with conspiring to steal historical documents from archives in several states.
Prosecutors have opposed releasing Barry Landau, who has been in federal custody since last week. Landau and an assistant are charged with taking documents from the Maryland Historical Society and other archives. A hearing Monday was postponed until Thursday morning to give investigators time to search Landau’s apartment again.
Prosecutors have said they are concerned Landau poses a flight risk and may try to destroy evidence or influence others involved in the case if he is released. A judge allowed the release of Landau’s assistant, Jason Savedoff (SA’-veh-dof), to his mother on $250,000 bail.
