Man, 50, charged in deadly Columbia Heights attack

D.C. police have charged a 50-year-old man with assault after a fatal beating in Columbia Heights over the weekend authorities are investigating as a homicide.

Police said Jeffery Mills was charged with assault with intent to kill while armed. The charges stem from the death of Juan Antonio Paredes, 45, of Northwest Washington.

Police said Paredes was attacked in the 3300 block of 14th St NW on Jan. 14 shortly before 2 p.m. Emergency responders found Paredes lying on the ground when they arrived shortly and took him to a hospital.

Paredes died the next day. An autopsy from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner found that the cause of death was blunt force trauma and authorities ruled the death as a homicide.

Police said more charges are pending in the case.
