Man accused of creating fake youth baseball team to make money

A Maryland man is accused of creating a fake youth baseball team, recruiting players, holding practices and collecting thousands of dollars, authorities in St. Mary’s County said.

Michael S. Erdolino, 38, of no fixed address, has been arrested and charged with theft after creating the fake Southern Maryland Athletics Youth Baseball team last September, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office.

He established a $500 registration fee for each player and held several fundraisers in St. Mary’s and Calvert counties, officials said. The money he raised was supposed to cover costs for practices, insurance, instructors, uniforms and equipment. However, only a few practices were held.

In February, Erdolino met with detectives and was unable to produce documentation for the money he had raised and how it had been spent.

Erdolino was arrested last Thursday in Hollywood, Md., and charged with multiple counts of theft.
