Man arrested outside White House in scuffle

A man was charged early Wednesday with hitting a uniformed U.S. Secret Service agent who was trying to break up a fight along a White House fence, according to authorities.

Brian Leary, a spokesman for the Secret Service, identified the suspect as Robert Paul Newman, 18. Leary said the incident occurred about 12:35 a.m. along Pennsylvania Avenue.

Newman was charged in a criminal citation with assault and battery on a police officer, Leary said.

Leary said he did not know why the two people were arguing. A crowd had gathered in the area of the White House after about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night when the election was called for President Obama.

Newman has been released pending a court hearing.
