Man escapes Beltway chase in Fairfax County

A man led police officers on a chase on the Beltway and other roads in Virginia Wednesday, before crashing the SUV he was driving and escaping, Virginia State Police said.

The incident began at 1:33 p.m. when a Virginia State Police trooper tried to stop a Toyota SUV for speeding in the northbound I-495 Express Lanes at Route 7, police said.

The SUV refused to stop and the trooper chased it, police said. The vehicle exited to the Dulles Toll Road going west and then took the exit for Spring Hill Road, where the driver lost control, police said.

The SUV went over the median and struck a tree. The driver fled the crash scene on foot, police said.

State and Fairfax County police spent the afternoon looking for the man, but the search was called off around 4:30 p.m. Police determined the SUV was reported stolen in Anne Arundel County.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the Virginia State Police Fairfax Division at 703-803-0027.
