Man hits car, jumps from Ballston garage

A man who was driving in the Ballston Common Mall garage sideswiped another car, got out of his car and — in an apparent effort to flee the scene — jumped over the ledge, landing about 35 feet below on concrete and injuring himself, police said.

He was taken to an area hospital with head and internal injuries, according to Arlington County police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.

About 12:40 p.m. Monday, the man was driving on the fourth level of the garage, Sternbeck said, when he hit the car. He got out and went over the ledge, hanging for a moment before he dropped, Sternbeck said.

“He thought the easiest way out was over the ledge,” Sternbeck said. “He didn’t realize how high it was.”

Sternbeck did not release the man’s name but said police are familiar with him.

“He is one of our frequent offenders for alcohol-related incidents,” Sternbeck said.
