Man killed in head-on crash with police cruiser

Police in Fairfax County are investigating a fiery crash that left one man dead and an officer hospitalized.

The head-on collision happened about 3 a.m. Monday in Alexandria. According to police, a car traveling on the westbound side of Franconia Road near Gum Street suddenly swerved left into the eastbound side.

The car struck an oncoming, marked Fairfax County police cruiser and erupted into flames, police said.

The civilian driver, identified as an adult male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

It is unknown what caused the driver to suddenly veer into the eastbound lane.

The crash remains under investigation, and drivers are urged to use caution if traveling through the area. Franconia Road was closed in both directions east of Van Dorn Street, and delays are expected to continue this morning.
