Man killed in Tuesday night Leesburg Pike crash

A New York man was killed in Herndon Tuesday night after he drove his car into oncoming traffic on Leesburg Pike and crashed into another vehicle, Fairfax County police said.

Michael Clawson, 33, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Clawson was driving his 2005 Hyundai Elantra on the Fairfax County Parkway around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, when he turned the wrong way on to the ramp leading from eastbound Leesburg Pike, police said.

Clawson traveled the full length of the ramp and got onto eastbound Route 7, but going in a westbound direction. The Elantra struck a median barrier on the bridge over Sugarland Run Stream and then swerved into oncoming traffic, police said.

The front of the Elantra struck an oncoming Ford Explorer, police said.

The driver of the Explorer, a 29-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, police said.
