A fight between two employees at a Ballston cafe became so fierce that one threw a pot of boiling water on the other, causing second-degree burns to his face, back and chest, according to Arlington police.

The victim then grabbed a knife in self-defense, but co-workers broke up the fight, said Arlington police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.

It happened at 7:40 Wednesday morning at Mary’s Cafe in the 4300 block of Wilson Boulevard. The victim was taken to an area hospital, and the alleged water thrower, James A. Muse, of Arlington, was arrested, Sternbeck said.

Muswas charged with malicious wounding, according to authorities.

The two co-workers apparently had an ongoing argument, Sternbeck said.

“They were engaged in disputes almost every shift,” Sternbeck said.

This item has been updated to detail the charge against Muse.
