Man who aided D.C. officers under attack honored

A District man who intervened when a man pulled out a makeshift knife and attacked two police officers in Chinatown on June 11 was honored by Mayor Vincent C. Gray and police Chief Cathy L. Lanier on Wednesday.

Yik Li was in the 800 block of 6th Street NW at about 5 p.m. when he saw the officers getting attacked. One officer lost consciousness, Lanier said during the mayor’s press conference.

"The attack came out of the blue,"Lanier said. "There's no doubt in my mind that his actions saved our police officers."

Li said through an interpreter that he wants to keep Chinatown safe to attract people to the area.

"His actions were critical and heroic,” Gray said.

The suspect was charged with assault on a police officer while armed.
