Missing elderly man from Northwest found dead

An 88-year-old man with dementia who went missing from his Northwest Washington home last month is believed to be the person found dead in a ravine near Rock Creek Park on Sunday, according to D.C. police.

A body was found about 1:45 p.m. in the 8100 block of East Beach Drive NW, near the northern edge of the park close to the Maryland line. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

D.C. police said a cause of death is pending an autopsy.

While authorities are working to positively identify the man, police said in a statement that they believe the body is that of John Matthews.

Matthews had last been seen Dec. 10 leaving his home in the 1400 block of Oglethrope Street NW, a little more than two miles south of where the body was found. At the time of his disappearance, police said he was wearing brown pants, a blue sweater and a maroon vest. Police said he suffered from dementia and required medication.
