Motorcyclist killed in West Springfield crash

A 45-year-old Annandale man was killed in a motorcycle crash Saturday evening in West Springfield after a car driving in the opposite direction tried to turn left infront of his motorcycle.

William Tyler Cowherd, of Medford Drive in Annandale, was riding a 2008 Harley Davidson eastbound on Braddock Road, with a 44-year-old Annandale woman as a passenger. A 50-year-old Manassas man, also on a 2008 Harley, was riding next to them in the left lane.

At about 7 p.m. Saturday, a 1997 Lexus sedan driving westbound on Braddock Road tried to make a left turn onto Twinbrook Road, crossing infront of the motorcyclists. The drivers hit their brakes but could not stop in time, and both struck the passenger side of the Lexus.

All three motorcyclists were taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where Cowherd died shortly after. The woman and the other man sustained severe injuries, but authorities expect them to survive. The driver of the Lexus, a 63-year-old Maryland woman, was not injured.

Fairfax County police are investigating the crash, but they said it does not appear to have been related to speed nor alochol. All three motorcyclists were wearing helmets.
