A New York man authorities said ingested more than two pounds of heroin in pellets has been charged with attempting to smuggle it into the United States through Dulles International Airport, according to court documents.
Michael Babatunde Ayodele, 19, was arrested aftera secondary inspectionon Jan. 16, court documents said. He had arrived on a flight from Nigeria via Kenya and Zurich, Switzerland, after what he claimed was a trip to visit family.
Customs and Border Patrol agents soon became suspicious of his story, authorities said. Ayodele asked to use the restroom in the middle of the inspection, passing 55 pellets that tested positive for heroin.
He passed an additional 31 pellets, which also tested positive for heroin, after being taken to Reston Hospital for observation. Ayodele acknowledged he swallowed the pellets, which he knew contained drugs, according to court documents.
The 86 pellets had a combined weight of 1089.3 grams — more than 2.4 pounds, authorities said. Ayodele was charged in federal court in the Eastern District of Virginia.
Earlier this month, according to authorities, a 61-year-old man was arrested at Dulles after authorities found more than a pound of heroin pellets in his stomach. Another man pleaded guilty to a similar offense days later.
