ALTAVISTA, Va. — Authorities have identified an Altavista police officer who fatally shot an 83-year-old woman.
The Virginia State Police tells media outlets that 36-year-old Sgt. L.P. Rigney shot Delma Towler on Sept. 19 after he and another officer responded to a 911 hang up call from her home.
Investigators have said Towler had a gun, refused to drop it and pointed it at the officers.
Family members have said Towler may have been trying to scare away a burglar.
Altavista Police Chief Clay Hamilton says Rigney remains on paid administrative leave.
A State Police investigation of the shooting is continuing.
Roanoke Commonwealth’s Attorney Don Caldwell is serving as special prosecutor for the case.
