One killed, one seriously hurt in fiery head-on crash in Anne Arundel

One man was killed and another seriously injured in a fiery, head-on car crash in southern Anne Arundel County early Saturday, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 5:45 a.m. on Chesapeake Beach Road, near the intersection with Sansbury Road, police said. A Ford Taurus headed east on Chesapeake Beach Road drifted into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with a Ford Expedition coming the other way, police said.

The driver of the Taurus — 61-year-old Ronald Lignelli, of Chesapeake Beach — was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash, authorities said. The driver of the Expedition — 33-year-old Andre Lavar Mackall, of Owings, was seriously injured but stabilized at an area hospital Saturday afternoon. Police said people passing by were able to pull him from his wrecked SUV before it was engulfed by flames.

Police said they are still investigating what caused Lignelli to veer into the path of the Expedition, and they did not know whether speed, drugs or alcohol were factors.
