Pedestrian struck and killed in Wheaton

A woman was struck and killed by a car as she crossed Georgia Avenue in Wheaton Thursday night, according to Montgomery County police.

Etsegenet Abebe Hurissa, 24, of Silver Spring, was crossing the northbound lanes of Georgia Avenue near Regina Drive around 10:40 p.m. when she was hit by a Volkswagen Eos, police said.

After she was struck, the Volkswagen veered off the road and crashed through a wooden fence, police said.

Hurissa died at the scene, according to police. The driver of the vehicle, Carlos Andre Arias, 18, of Silver Spring, and a passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Police are still investigating the collision and are seeking witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to call the police at (301) 840-2435. No charges have been filed in the case.
