Pedestrian struck, killed while guiding tractor-trailer

February 2, 2012

A Virginia man was killed Wednesday when he stepped into the street in an attempt to help a tractor-trailer back out of a parking lot, and was struck by an oncoming car, Fairfax County police said.

The pedestrian, 69-year-old Basil Knick of Mineral, was struck in the 2500 block of Fox Mill Road in Reston shortly after 11:30 a.m.

According to police, the driver of the striking vehicle, 59-year-old Darryl Barnes of Sterling, did not see Knick in the road.

Barnes remained at the scene of the accident, and was charged with failing to pay full time and attention. Neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in this crash, police said.

Knick was flown by helicopter to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Crash reconstruction detectives continue to investigate. Anyone with information can call 1-866-411-TIPS/8477 or 703-691-2131, e-mail www.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org, or text “TIP187” plus a message to CRIMES/274637.
