Pistol-whipping near a downtown sandwich shop

A man was sent to a hospital Wednesday night after he was pistol-whipped during an attempted robbery in downtown D.C.

The incident occurred about 8 p.m. near the Pret A Manger gourmet sandwich shop at19th and L streets NW. The three male suspects, all of whom were wearing white dress shirts with burgundy stripes, fled the scene, police said.

A police spokesman said it wasn’t immediately clear whether the incident happened just inside the sandwich shop, or outside of it.

The victim was transported later to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The assault remains under investigation.
