Police arrest man for alleged rampage at Landover day care center

Authorities arrested a 26-year-old man Thursday for allegedly rampaging through a Landover day-care center, assaulting a security guard there and stealing a car to escape, Prince George’s County police said.

Police arrested Mickel Tyrone Young Thursday afternoon, hours after officials said he entered the “It’s a Family Affair” daycare center in the 300 block of Garrett Morgan Boulevard about 10:30 a.m. After walking inside he asked to use the telephone, but staff members refused and Young became violent, police said.

No children were harmed or witnessed the incident, officials said. But a security guard working there retrieved a baseball bat to confront Young and he took it away from him and assaulted the male guard, police said.

The guard was taken to a hospital, but is expected to survive his injuries.

Young briefly left the center but returned and picked up the bat, and began breaking windows, authorities said.  He then left again, but this time with an employee’s car keys, and stole the employee’s vehicle.
District III patrol officers later located the stolen vehicle near Barlowe Road and Village Green Drive, and they arrested Young, police said. Officials said in a statement that Young appeared “to be under the influence of a dangerous substance.”
After police took him to a police station, officials said Young kicked a hole in a wall and assaulted three officers, who tried to subdue him.  Authorities then took Young to a hospital for an emergency psychological evaluation, police said.
Police said he was arrested a via a warrant.
