A man allegedly drained thousands of dollars from accounts at a Dunkirk bank after placing a “skimmer” device on an ATM so he could capture bank account information, the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office said.

The thief placed the skimmer on a machine on the exterior of the SunTrust Bank in the 10500 block of Southern Maryland Boulevard around 4 p.m. on July 23, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The man returned the next day and removed it shortly after 8 p.m., authorities said.

A preliminary investigation found the suspect withdrew between $500 and $3,000 from more than 50 accounts, but there could be more victims, the Sheriff’s Office said.

So far, that branch is the only one that has reported skimming in the county.
