Police: Girl found in Va. garage is missing 11-month-old

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach police say DNA tests show a child’s body found in an Oceanfront parking garage is that of an 11-month-old girl who was reported missing.

Police said Monday in a news release that a determination of the cause of Janyiha Whiteman’s death is still pending.

Police found the body Oct. 21 and arrested the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, Lawrence Ray Smith, that day on unrelated felony charges. He was charged Nov. 1 with abuse and neglect of a child and unlawful disposal of a body.

Police say the child was left in Smith’s care on Sept. 16. Family members told the mother they last saw Smith and the girl on Oct. 1. The family contacted police on Oct. 6.
