Police ID man run over during robbery attempt

Police have identified the man run over by a car and killed during an attempted robbery in Capitol Heights early Sunday morning as 30-year-old Bradford A. McCoy, authorities said.

McCoy, of Landover, was standing with three other men in a neighborhood in the 1200 block of Oates Street just after midnight when the group was approached by three masked men armed with handguns, said Cpl. Larry Johnson, a Prince George’s County police spokesman. He said the gunmen ordered the foursome to lie on the ground, apparently trying to rob them and a woman who was sitting nearby in the driver’s seat of a white sedan, Johnson said.

Johnson said the four men laid down, but the woman — startled and trying to get away — stepped on the gas. Her car ran over McCoy, who was lying on the street in front of it, Johnson said.

Johnson said he did not know the relationships among the men in the group and the woman in the car.

Investigators are still looking for the masked men, Johnson said. He and a spokesman for the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office said investigators and prosecutors are still probing all aspects of the case, and it was too early to say whether the woman who ran over McCoy would be charged with any crimes.

Johnson declined to immediately identify the woman, saying she was considered a victim of the robbery. He said she is 28 years old and lived in Lanham.
