Police ID person found dead Saturday in D.C.

D.C. police said they have identified the person found dead Saturday morning in Columbia Heights.

Gaurav Gopalan, of Northwest, was 35 years old, said police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump on Tuesday. On Monday, police said Gopolan may have been a victim of a crime targeting transgender persons.

Police were able to identify the victim one day after they released photo of Gopalan’s head, eyes closed, to the public.

The investigation into Gopalan’s death was announced at a news conference at police headquarters during which police tried to reassure members of the transgender community that police were seriously investigating crimes against them. At the time, they did not know who the person was or how he died.
