Police identify boy who shot himself in the head

Police have identified Kyrell Kyyon McNeill as the 4-year-old Woodbridge boy they say died Wednesday after he found a gun in a family member’s truck and shot himself in the head.

Around 3:25 p.m., police said, a relative of McNeill’s called police to report the shooting, which occurred outside his home in the 14800 block of Empire Street in Woodbridge, Virginia. The boy was apparently alone, police said.

They said McNeill was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert said investigators are working to determine whether family members were neglectful as they consider potential charges.

The boy’s mother was “supervising the child to some degree” at the time of the shooting, Ebert said. Investigators and prosecutors will weigh whether the mother and other caretakers were attentive enough in considering potential charges, according to police and Ebert.

In Virginia, Ebert said, it is not illegal by itself to have a loaded weapon in a vehicle, although if it was concealed it the owner would have to have obtained a concealed weapons permit, he said.

Authorities have not said where in the vehicle the boy found the gun.
