Police: Man shot outside Md. club has died

A District man shot outside a Prince George's County nightclub early Saturday morning has died, police said Tuesday.

Philip J. Watson, 30, of Northeast, was shot and wounded at about 1 a.m. Saturday outside the Surf Club in the 4700 block of Kenilworth Avenue in Edmonston, said Edmonston Police Chief Stephen E. Walker.

Watson, whose first name may also be spelled Phillip,, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead seven or eight hours later, Walker said.

Police were called to the club after an altercation that spilled outside, Walker said. He said Prince George's County police homicide detectives were reviewing surveillance footage from the club, and he hoped to have an update on their progress Wednesday.

Walker said he had no information about suspects, motive or what sparked the altercation.

Matt Zapotosky covers the federal district courthouse in Alexandria, where he tries to break news from a windowless office in which he is not allowed to bring his cell phone.
