Police: Thieves steal running cars from Lorton driveways

Fairfax County police are warning residents of the Lorton area after thieves stole 10 cars that were left running in owners’ driveways over the last two months.

The “jump in” thefts ocurred in the area off Silverbook Road and the thieves entered the vehicles as owners warmed them up in the early morning hours of weekdays, police said.

Police are urging residents to not leave their vehicles unattended while running, and to pay attention to their surroundings when getting into or out of vehicles.

Five of the ten stolen vehicles have been recovered, police said. The vehicles range in value froman $8,000 2004 Toyota Corolla to a $50,000 2012 Acura TL, police said.

Police have distributed flyers in the area about the thefts and posted electronic billboards to raise awareness in the area. Police are asking anyone with information about the cases to call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS/8477.
