Three men have been charged in connection with the killing of a Mount Vernon-area man in December, but investigators believe the suspects have fled to Latin America, Fairfax County police said Friday.
Jose Santos Ponce Zuniga, 31, has been charged with murder, while Noel Urbina Zelaya, 29, and Saul Pacheco Mejia, 45, are facing charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine, police said.
Colvin Morris, 34, was shot in the parking lot of a Reston apartment complex on Dec. 12 at around 4:15 p.m., police said. He was taken to a hospital with trauma to his upper body, but later died, police said. The shooting occurred in the 1500 block of Cameron Crescent Drive.
“We are fairly confident that this was an illegal drug transaction,” said Office Bud Walker, a Fairfax County police spokesman.
Walker said the suspects have connections to a number of countries and their exact whereabouts are not known. He said police would try to extradite the men to the United States to stand trial, if they are apprehended.
