Possible life sentence for serial rapist who posed as taxi driver

A District man who pretended to be a taxicab driver was convicted Monday of multiple kidnappings and sexual assaults on women he lured into his vehicle, authorities said.

Emero Tornero, 32, kidnapped, sexually assaulted and raped multiple women at gunpoint and knifepoint between 2005 and 2008, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District.

He trapped the women inside a vehicle rigged so its back doors and windows wouldn’t open from the inside, authorities said, then drove to secluded locations, where he attacked the women. A D.C. Superior Court jury found him guilty Monday.

It was Tornero’s second conviction in a little over a year. In late 2011, he was sentenced to more than 24 years in prison after a series of violent attacks against taxi drivers in the District.

Police used DNA evidence to link Tornero to the crimes against women, which were unsolved until a third sexual assault took place.

Tornero faces a potential life sentence without the possibility of release. Sentencing is scheduled for March 13.
