Potomac boater dies near National Mall fireworks show

WASHINGTON — Authorities say a man has died after he apparently slipped and hit his head while on a boat and fell into the Potomac River.

D.C. fire department spokesman Pete Piringer says authorities were called to an area of the river about half a mile south of the Memorial Bridge on Monday night for a report of a person in the water. Piringer says that the man apparently fell while untethering his boat from another and fell in the water.

He was taken to a hospital where he later died.
