Prince George’s County Police Chief Mark Magaw said the officer who died was 23-years-old and had been on the force for more than two years. He also had been in the Police Explorer’s program, geared to youths who want to be officers, as a teenager, Magaw said.
A second officer involved in the crash is expected to survive, Magaw said.
Police said the pair were investigating an attempted break-in to a car and that witnesses described a vehicle they thought the suspects were driving. The officers thought they saw the car, Magaw said, and were trying to catch up when they lost control and veered into a ravine. The officer who died was ejected from the cruiser and suffered head injuries, Magaw said.
