Prison for former Charles Co. school official

GREENBELT, Md. — A former Charles County school official who stole from federal funds for low-income students has been sentenced to 27 months in prison.

Forty-one-year-old Rhayda Barnes-Thomas of Accokeek was also ordered to pay more than $100,000 in restitution at sentencing Friday.

According to her plea agreement, Barnes-Thomas used Title I funding — federal aid awarded to school districts with large numbers of children from low-income families — to buy more than 200 electronics items.

The items included Nintendo Wii consoles and games, televisions, iPads and iPods.
