Prison for woman who collected dead relatives’ retirement

A Chesapeake, Va., woman will spend two years in prison for collecting two deceased relatives’ retirement benefits totaling more than $220,000.

The Virginian-Pilot reports that 60-year-old Barbara J. Bond was sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge Jerome B. Friedman.

Bond had pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing government property.

Bond admitted collecting her mother’s Social Security benefits after she died in April 2000. Bond also admitted collecting her mother-in-law’s federal civil service retirement benefits after she also died in April 2000.
