ROANOKE, Va. — A judge has reduced a murder charge against a Roanoke woman who’s on trial in the death of her 2-year-old son.
Media outlets report that Roanoke Circuit Court Judge Clifford Weckstein reduced the first-degree murder charge against 24-year-old Morgan Lockett to second-degree murder on Monday.
Weckstein’s decision came on the fifth day of Lockett’s trial. She’s also charged with child abuse.
Lockett’s son, Aveion Lewis, was reported missing in January 2010. The child’s body was found wrapped in plastic and tape in a Roanoke County landfill about two weeks later. The cause of death wasn’t determined.
In August, Lockett’s husband, Brandon Lockett, pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and child neglect. His sentencing is scheduled in November.
The defense is scheduled to present its case Tuesday.
