Richmond ends September with 11 homicides

RICHMOND, Va. — A spike in homicides makes September the deadliest month in Richmond since 2007.

Virginia’s capital ended the month on Sunday with 11 homicides.

Mayor Dwight C. Jones plans to address the media Tuesday about the surge in violence.

Spokeswoman Tammy D. Hawley tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the mayor is concerned about the spike in homicides. But he’s also encouraged by the Richmond Police Department’s clearance rate of these crimes.

Police say arrests have been made in six cases. An arrest warrant has been issued in another case.

The city is on track to surpass the 37 homicides reported in 2011. So far this year, there have been 35.

Richmond police say overall violent crime is down by 4 percent.
