State police search Western Maryland house for guns

Maryland State Police spent hours searching a Western Maryland home on Thursday looking for guns they say a man illegally possessed.

Police said they were not able to locate the 46-year-old man they had been seeking in Sharpsburg, and said in a statement that they planned to seek a warrant for his arrest.

Police said they went to the one-story home on Mills Road about noon with a search warrant and thought the man was hiding inside. Tactical officers and members of the hostage negotiating team assisted in the operation in Washington County.

Troopers saw several long guns in the house when they entered. They also said they had been tipped off that the man had handguns. Police said the man is prohibited by state and federal law from possessing firearms.

After the search, police concluded that neither the man nor his wife and children were home. Police cleared the scene about 7 p.m. and said they seized several firearms.
