A Temple Hills man has been charged with fatally stabbing his 62-year-old live-in girlfriend, then leaving her body on the balcony of the apartment the two shared, authorities said Friday.
Donald Dixon, 50, was arrested Thursday and charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Vicki Lee Griffin, who was found dead on the balcony of her apartment in the 4600 block of Dallas Place in Temple Hills just before 10:30 a.m. the same day, police said. Cpl. Henry Tippett, a Prince George’s County police spokesman, said investigators believe the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute.
Authorities were first tipped that something was amiss inside Dixon and Griffin’s apartment when a neighbor called 911 to report a strong odor of gasoline coming from inside. Firefighters arrived to find a flammable liquid spread about and Griffin dead on the balcony.
Tippett said the liquid inside appears to have been a cleaning solution, and said detectives think it may have been used in an effort to cover up evidence of the crime.
Neighbors said Griffin, known to some in her apartment complex as “Moms,” was a friendly woman who would walk her dog on the paths in between the buildings. Tippett said she lived in the apartment with Dixon and Dixon’s sister, and she and Dixon were involved in a romantic relationship.
The dog, Tippett said, has been turned over to Dixon’s sister, who is not believed to have any involvement in the crime. Tippett said Dixon’s sister saw Griffin alive before going to work Thursday morning.
