Three shot outside U Street nightclub overnight

Three men were shot outside a U Street nightclub overnight, officials confirmed Monday morning.

D.C. police said the shooting happened shortly after midnight outside of Indulj Restaurant and Lounge, in the 1200 block of U Street NW.

At a Monday morning press conference, D.C. Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier said the shooting stemmed from a dispute that started inside.

Fred Moosally, director of the District’s Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration, said Monday afternoon that Indulj would be closed for 96 hours starting Monday evening at 6 p.m.

Further suspension of the club’s liquor license is to be discussed at a Wednesday Alcoholic Beverage Commisison hearing, Moosally, said.

D.C. Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) said the shooting is a clear indication that the U Street area, which is packed with bars, restaurants, shops and residences, needs a bigger police presence.

One victim was shot in the back, one was shot in the leg and the third was shot in the shoulder, police said.

All three men were conscious and breathing when paramedics arrived. They were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Police have issued a lookout for a white Ford or Chevrolet, but no other suspect information has been released.

It remains unclear what led to the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.

A call to Indulj was not answered late Monday morning.
