Two beaten in possible hate crime

Two men were beaten in Washington over the weekend in an attack that police said may have stemmed from bias against gays.

The incident occurred around midnight Sunday and “may have been motivated by hate bias,” police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump said in an email.

She added that the department’s gay and lesbian liaison unit has been notified.

In the incident, police said, two people were in the 1900 block of Third Street NE, when three suspects appeared and “began to yell homophobic slurs at them.”

The three then approached the victims and beat them. One was taken to a hospital for treatment.
