Two dead in Beltway crash in Chevy Chase

Two people were killed Monday night in a crash involving three vehicles on the outer loop of the Washington Beltway near Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase, according to Maryland State Police.

The victims who died — a 30-year-old woman and a 17-year-old male — were in a car whose driver lost control on a curve and slid across the highway, police said. The driver was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore in serious condition.

The deaths bring to five the number of people killed on area roadways on Christmas Eve — a woman in Arlington County, a 78-year-old in Middletown, Md., and a man on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Landover whose car slammed into a tree.

Christmas morning brought more problems, particularly on Maryland roads near Baltimore. State police briefly shut down both directions of I-95 near the Baltimore-Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport after two accidents caused by icy conditions. State highway crews sanded the lanes before they were reopened.

Around 7 a.m., numerous cars had spun out along I-95 between Baltimore and Washington, and state police cruisers were stationed along bridges to warn motorists to slow down.

The fatal accident on the Beltway occurred about 9:40 p.m. Police said there was a light rain falling, with temperatures hovering around freezing, but the cause of the crash remained under investigation on Tuesday. Names of the victims were not immediately released pending notification of relatives.

State police at the Rockville Barracks said the driver of a Chevrolet Malibu lost control on a curve, hydroplaned across the slick pavement and spun into a Toyota pickup truck. A Chevrolet Silverado then hit the Malibu, police said.

The deceased were both passengers in the Malibu, police said, and both were from Silver Spring. Aside from the driver, a 36-year-old woman from Silver Spring, others involved in the crash suffered minor injuries, police said.
