Two people were killed in a fire in a vacant apartment building in Southeast Washington on Tuesday morning, according to the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department.
The fire was first reported about 10 a.m. in the 1700 block of R Street SE in Anacostia. The fire quickly went to two alarms, drawing dozens of firefighters.
Lon Walls, the fire department’s communications director, said the building was vacant and that firefighters found the bodies during a search after the fire had been brought under control about 11 a.m.
No other details about the victims were immediately available.
One firefighter suffered a broken ankle in the blaze and another suffered a minor injury.
