Two teens arrested in shooting outside Rockville metro station station that injured two

Two teenagers have been charged as adults in a Friday afternoon shooting just outside the Rockville Metro station that left two people injured, Rockville City police said.

Kevin Q. Nguyen, 16, and Tavares D. Harris 17, both of Rockville, were charged with attempted first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a violent felony and first-degree assault. Police said they think Nguyen was the shooter.

The shooting occurred just after 2:30 p.m. as commuters were coming and going at the aboveground Metro station. Police have said they think the gunman targeted one victim, a 16-year-old male who was shot at least once in the leg. A second victim, an 18-year-old female who was grazed by a bullet, was a bystander, police said.

They said the injuries to both victims were not life-threatening. Police did not have an update on their conditions Saturday.

Nguyen was apprehended at a nearby gas station minutes after officers arrived at the scene, police said. They said Harris was taken into custody later.

In a Saturday news release, police said investigators are “following up on information that this incident may have been motivated by an ongoing dispute or disagreement.” They did not elaborate. Police have said they recovered a handgun they believe was used.

Both teenagers were held without bond, and they are scheduled to appear in court Monday, police said. Family members of the two suspects could not be reached Saturday, and it was unclear whether they had attorneys.

Police ask that anyone who was at the metro station at the time of the shooting and may have information call the Rockville City Police Criminal Investigations Unit at 240-314-8938.
