A person was shot and killed Wednesday night on a street in La Plata, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said.

Officers were patrolling an area of Charles Street when they heard gunshots about 8:45 p.m., said Diane Richardson, a police spokeswoman. After searching the area for a few minutes, officers found the person with fatal wounds in the road in the 200 block of Kent Avenue.

The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators did not know immediately whether the victim was male or female.
